'The Day I Shadowed an Engineer'

One student's story of learning about careers in engineering

For 16female students in the United Arab Emirates, a visit to the Honeywell office inDubai was a day of inspiration and learning. The students, who aspire to be scientists and engineers, were there as part ofJob Shadow Day, sponsored by Honeywell Hometown Solutions (HHS) inpartnership with INJAZ UAE, amember of Junior Achievement Worldwide. The goal of the program is to increasestudents' understanding of jobs and careers through authentic real-life on-sitecorporate experiences.

Theinitiative supports Honeywell's skill development efforts in the UAE, andpromotes national efforts to encourage students to explore potential careeropportunities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)fields. Ghaya Mohammad a 12th grade student from Al Khaleej National SchoolGhayaMohammad, a 12thgrade student from Al Khaleej National School, took a moment to share herexperiences:“Our morning began with a mentoring session with Ross McKenzie, a Honeywellengineer. He talked about work-readiness and the success skills needed topursue career opportunities in STEM. “I then participated in mock interviews and received guidance on careers inengineering. It helped me become more confident with public speaking as well asbecome more aware of the key skills used during a job interview. The main thingI learned was how important is to use the right information to prove that youare a valuable asset for the organization. “Later, I visited different departments such as aerospace, security,production, human resources, and corporate communications. I got an insight into the working life ofprofessionals across multiple disciplines and I was very impressed with thepeople I met. “I am very passionate about astronomy and physics, and want to studyastrophysics and space exploration. Having a mentor made me realize theimportance of teamwork, communication skills and the impact of technology onour lives. “I am sure I'm not alone in my reaction to the Job Shadow Day. My classmateNour Ahmed told me, ‚Äòthe entire program was immensely beneficial in elevatingthe skills and knowledge I need for the future'.

“The whole day was agreat opportunity to glimpse our potential future!”
